Welcome to Probability & Statistics (MAT 120)

Welcome to Probability & Statistics (MAT 120).  The course management system for this course is both Desire2Learn (D2L) & Coursecompass, aka MyStatLab (MSL).   The Publisher has embedded MSL inside of D2L.

Prior to January 2019, you would have bought an access code from the bookstore or from the Pearson to gain access to the course materials for MAT 120.  Now, you no longer have to do that. When you registered for this course, you were charged a "DIGITAL COURSE MATERIALS" fee, which is the lowest price available for access to MyMathLab. You will also not have to set up your userID or anything else.

MML is the management system which contains the course's e-textbook, homework, tests, and much more. To best orient yourself to this course, CLICK "Content" on the top ribbon of this screen; this should put you into the core of the MSL environment.

The departmental syllabus for this course is at the following link: DEPARTMENT SYLLABUS

This syllabus says that your instructor is Ms. Velicky or Mr. Fleming, she/he is not.  She/he is the person in charge of all math syllabus in our department.  The College appends other information to all College syllabus, and she is the only one in the math department who has the password to create any additions or changes to math syllabi.  For this reason, I created an addendum to the syllabus.

Calculator

You MUST have either a TI-83 or a TI-84 graphing calculator (any model like PLUS or SILVER or COLOR, just so the number is 83 or 84) and bring it with you to EVERY class period.

When you take a test in the Hub, they will give you a TI-84 calculator with preloaded programs: FIXCALC and InvT.  At your earliest convenience (No later than the day you decide to take the first test), please have me or someone in the Math Hub download these programs to your TI calculator.  RUN the program FIXCALC on the calculator they give you when you take a test in the HUB.

Online tests must be taken in the Hub (Testing Center)
The testing center will provide you with a formula sheet when you take the test there.

If you cannot take a Unit Test during the availability dates, CONTACT ME ASAP; otherwise, you will receive a ZERO on the Unit Test...if that happens, there is almost no chance of you passing the course.  Your password-protected test MUST be proctored in a testing center. These tests are not timed, but you must finish before the Hub closes.  If the Hub closes at 8:30 PM, you must start the test by 7:30 PM.  The assistants in the Hub are instructed not to let you take within one hour of closing time.
To encourage you not to procrastinate, I will add 3 points to your test grade if you take the test within THREE (3) days of the tests availability; I will add TWO (2) points if you do not wait until the late day to take the test. Please make sure you have a FDTC ID before using the Math Hub for testing or free tutoring.

Online quizzes are not proctored and not password protected
You may take the quizzes as often as you like to improve your quiz grade...these are timed (120 minutes) and there is a due date.  They are good practice before taking a unit test.

Typical Testing Center Hours on the Main Campus-First Floor, 7000 building
Mon - Thurs:  9:30 am – 8:30 pm
Friday:  9:30 am – 3:00 pm

Grading Scale:
A: X ≥ 89.5
B: 79.5 ≤ X < 89.5
C: 69.5 ≤ X < 79.5
D: 59.5 ≤ X < 69.5
F: X < 59.5

W: I will withdraw you from my course with a grade of W if (1) you have missed 3 or more classes before March 25, have less than a 70 average on homework, and less than a 60 average on tests OR (2) if you have have six (6) absences, I will withdraw you from the course regardless of grades earned.
I define being tardy as missing more than 20 minutes of class OR missing more than 10 minutes of class two times in a row.  I will count being tardy times as an absence.  I will strictly enforce this policy after the first week of classes. A grade of W does not affect your GPA.

WF: Any withdrawal after March 25 results in a WF which equals an F.  A W does not affect your GPA, but a WF does.
